I am a native of San Antonio and a graduate of Texas A&M University where I received a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a doctoral degree in educational administration. Upon returning to San Antonio, I was able to combine my education with a passion for supporting students with disabilities for forty years in a school district in San Antonio. Throughout those years, I taught and administrated over several schools and/or programs. I was fortunate to have schools that educated students who had emotional/mental health issues as well as a program that transitioned students with disabilities, including students with mental health issues, into the community. Although I am now retired, I still continue to support students with disabilities and their families on a consulting basis. I am the proud mother of two adult daughters and four grandchildren. Being from San Antonio, I want to give to the community so it can continue to be a place of growth for all people no matter what their background or abilities may be.

Why did you decide to serve as a Trailblazer for the JLSA?

I decided to serve as a Trailblazer for the JLSA because I believe in the cause! Training is critical for successful outcomes for individuals with mental health issues. I had the privilege of providing wrap-around services for many of the students in my programs. Clarity Child Guidance Center was always very willing to participate in those services whether it was sharing information by phone or hosting a meeting of stakeholders on their campus to transition students leaving Clarity back to the schools. Clarity did whatever was needed to have the best possible outcomes for the individuals in their care. As an educator and administrator who wanted what was best for my students, I was so appreciative of their involvement. The winners were the students, their families, the schools and the community.

Who and/or what inspires you to pave a path in our community (be a community leader/participant)?

Every child and/or family that is coping with mental health issues in our community that I have met throughout the last forty years and those I continue to meet inspire me to be a participant in this project. I am also inspired and excited for the schools and teachers who will greatly benefit from the training. Educators want to help but don’t always have the “tools” for these students. They will have more strategies and interventions to provide for their struggling students which is a win-win for all.
